Chapter 23
Ding!
[You are now underwater. Your movement speed is reduced by 30%. You can hold your breath for 1 minute and 56 seconds before you begin to drown.]
Are you kidding me? Owen thought, a mix of annoyance and awe at Mysthavenâs commitment to realism. The sensation of diving into the river was indistinguishable from the real thingâthe temperature, the pressure, the resistance of the water.
Fortunately, the Whispering Serpent River was only about a dozen yards deep, so his breath timer was more than sufficient. He surfaced, took a deep gulp of air, and plunged back down.
His mental map was pinpoint accurate. Just as it indicated, the moment he passed five yards deep, he was swarmed by Level 15 underwater monsters. A school of basin-sized, black-scaled fish with wide, toothy maws turned as one and shot toward him like a volley of living arrows.
[Inscale Piranha]
(Normal Underwater Monster)
Level: 15
Health: 10,800
Attack: 522
Physical Defense: 261
Magic Defense: 248
Skill: [Bleeding Bite]
Owen was ready. He unleashed a massively empowered [Netherfrost Ward].
Absorbed Damage: -436, -437, -435â¦
Dozens of piranhas slammed into his shield simultaneously, dealing nearly 8,000 damage in an instant. Yet Owen didn't lose a single point of health, and the swirling shield of energy didn't even flicker.
Normally, the shield could only absorb 5,000 damage before shattering. But this time, Owen had burned 1,600 mana to cast it, supercharging the effect. The absorption cap was now a staggering 80,000. This was the terrifying power of a Cryo-Shaman: with enough mana, the strength of his skills had no limit.
The dozens of piranhas that had attacked him were instantly annihilated by the 40x Retribution, their bodies dissolving into points of experience. The rest of the swarm, heedless of the danger, continued their frenzied assault, effectively sacrificing themselves to grant Owen more experience and increase his permanent mana pool.
When the entire school of over a hundred fish was dead, his Netherfrost Ward still had over 10,000 points of durability remaining. He almost wished there had been a thousand of them; he could have farmed an immense amount of mana. He ignored the copper coins sinking to the riverbed and continued his descent.
After dealing with another swarm, he finally reached the bottom. The pressure here was immense, making his ears ache and his chest feel tight. He pushed through the discomfort. A shape dislodged itself from the sandy riverbed and charged himâa moving rock the size of a small car.
[River Snapper]
(Normal Underwater Monster)
Level: 16
Health: 13,000
Attack: 511
Physical Defense: 299
Magic Defense: 288
Skill: [Hardened Shell]
This one wasnât old enough to be his quest objective. Its attack was even lower than the piranhasâ. He fired off a basic attack that clanged off its stone-like shell.
-425!
Its defense was impressive, but its attack was not. It rammed into his chest, knocking him back a few yards.
-425!
40x Retribution: -17,000!
The snapperâs health bar vanished. It flipped onto its back, its eyes glazed over, dead. Owen chugged a mana potion and was surprised to see the snapper had dropped a piece of gear. It was a heavy, turtle-shell-patterned shield.
